HOW CAN WE HELP?

THE PREMISE OF THE WEBSITE IS THAT THE THINGS WE CHOOSE AS HOW TO HELP ARE DEPENDENT UPON OUR ASSUMPTIONS.  This HOW CAN WE HELP section explores this question through the list of domains below.
  • Goals of treatments
    • This section clearly relates to the premise of this website by articulating underlying assumptions of common goals of treatment
  • Types of treatments
    • This section will be of major interest to many people.  It will be built out more extensively over time, with further subpages to discuss specific treatments in more detail, along with more extensive bibliographic support.  the approach will be reflective- that is, explicitly mindful of underlying assumptions
  • Research approaches
    • Research is a way to help by finding out what works, what is going on, and more. This section is related to website’s discussion of evidence, and comes from the premise that we need a variety of different types of evidence and research methods for understanding and helping autism’s complexity.
  • Policy approaches
    • Policy is a form of trying to help at a larger scale.  I would welcome a discussion about this.
  • Advocacy
    • Advocacy is a clear way to work to make a difference.  This section is under construction at present.
  • Prevention
    • There are a number of very different conceptions of “prevention” that lead to very different agendas.  This section analyses these different conceptions in relation to underlying models of “What Is Autism” and “What Causes Autism.”
  • Technologies
    • There are a number of different classes of technologies targeting autism. How best can they be used? What else might be useful?
  • Supports: personal, community
    • This section is under construction at present.
  • Systems & Integrative Methods
    • How can we be rigorous about interconnection? For one thing by recognizing describable dynamics other than simple cause-and-effect.
  • Transformational practices
    • This section contains a definition of transformational practices from a systems point of view. Going forward, it will discuss and analyze practices from the vantage point of how they contribute to increased robustness and resiliency.
  • Make an Autism Revolution
    • This website fleshes out considerations implicitly understanding my book The Autism Revolution: Whole Body Strategies for Making Life All It Can Be. It includes a link to the book’s introduction which explains why all the different points of view that influenced the framework of the book are valuable.  It calls for a higher synthesis across these many vantage points.  Autism is big and complex and there is lots of room for many perspectives.
